What is waxing?
Waxing is the process of applying warm melted wax to the hairs on the body; when the wax cools, it ‘shrink-wraps’ itself around the hair shaft.  The wax is then quickly removed, taking the hair — including the root — with it. Waxing leaves the skin smooth, clean and feeling awesome!

What is a Brazilian Wax?
A Brazilian wax is the removal of all of the pubic hair, front and back, using wax.  Some people opt to have a small shape left in the hair.  This shape may be a small strip of hair.

How often should I get my waxing treatment?
We recommend every four weeks; regular waxing is essential.  The skin will be less sensitive if waxing is done regularly.  Over time, with consistent waxing, the hair follicle will have less and less of a grip on the hair to be pulled and the hairs will come out more easily.

Another reason to wax frequently is that you may even experience less hair growth over time.

How long, or short, should my hair be for waxing?
The hair should be at least 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch for best results.  If you have coarse hair, it should be closer to 1/2-inch for the first few waxes.  Once the hair becomes finer, it can be waxed at a shorter length.

What are the possible side effects of waxing and how can they be minimized?
Although we cannot predict or guarantee who may react, most clients do not experience reactions beyond redness and minor irritation.  Hair may break at the root during waxing, causing some hairs to grow out faster.  Please follow these guidelines to minimize irritation and possible breakouts:

  • Avoid the sun immediately after waxing and please wear sunscreen; recently waxed areas are prone to hyperpigmentation (permanent darkening of the skin) if exposed to the sun.
  • Avoid heavy exercise for at least 24 hours after waxing
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools and other heated sources for at least 48 hours
  • Do not use exfoliating products (AHAs, scrubs, etc.) or loofahs for at least 24 hours after waxing as they might further irritate your skin.
  • Avoid tight clothing after waxing, especially in the waxed areas.  Tight clothing may result in irritation and/or ingrown hairs.
  • Regular exfoliation may be helpful to remove dead skin so your hairs can grow out above the surface of the pores and not become ingrown.
  • Routine waxing helps the skin get accustomed to the procedure and may minimize irritation.
  • No sweating!  No hot bath, hot shower, etc. for at least 10 hours after a Brazilian.  While your pores are open, they are vulnerable to irritation by the extreme temperatures and infection by bacteria.

What is sugaring?
Sugaring is the newest popular method for hair removal.  Instead of using wax and pulling against the hair growth (as waxing does), sugaring uses a sugar paste (made entirely of a special kind of sugar, lemon and water — nothing artificial!) and removing the hair in the direction of the hair growth.

Does waxing or sugaring hurt?
It depends on which part of the body and how long you have been waxing, as well as how sensitive you may be to pain.  For most clients, the first time or two — especially in sensitive areas — may experience some discomfort.  We recommend taking a little Ibuprofen about 30 minutes prior to your first appointment to minimize discomfort.  However — the more often you wax, the finer the hair grows back and the easier it is to remove.  Seasoned waxers experience little to no discomfort after a few regular visits.

How long does it take?
It depends on the treatment being performed.  Our licensed estheticians work quickly and efficiently to get you on your way as soon as possible, while providing a safe and pleasing experience for you.

How long do I have to wait between treatments?
We recommend visiting every 4 weeks, but certainly do not wait more than 6 weeks between visits to keep your skin as smooth and hair-free as possible.

What if I have sensitive skin?
Many clients do!  Please let your esthetician know.  We have different wax products we can use to make your visit more pleasant.  Additionally, as mentioned above, you may take an Ibuprofen or two 30 minutes prior to your visit.  Check with your doctor first if you are unsure.

I’m pregnant; can I still get waxed?
Yes!  There will be no harm to you or your precious baby.  Be sure to wear loose fitting clothes to your visit and we will make you as comfortable as possible.

I’m on my monthly cycle; can I still get waxed?
Yes!  Simply wear a tampon and you should be good to go!  However we recommend scheduling your appointment for the first two weeks following the end of your cycle, as that seems to be when most clients are the least sensitive.

Is there a minimum age required for clients?
We welcome any age to our Boutique!  Clients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Do I have to get completely undressed?
It depends on the service being performed, of course — but there must be no clothing covering the area being waxed.  For bikini or Brazilian waxes, you may keep on all clothing above the waist.

What should I wear to my waxing appointment?
Please wear loose-fitting clothing to prevent chafing after your visit.  The waxed areas need time to ‘breathe’ and should not be tightly covered.

Are there any side effects I should be aware of?
Every client is different, but some of the more common after effects of waxing are a little redness or irritation in the area.  This will subside after a few hours for most clients. Please follow our recommendations above for avoiding sweating and hot showers, baths, etc.

The more often you wax, the more tolerant your body will become and the less irritation you will experience.

What if I have a medical condition?
Please check with your doctor prior to your first visit if you have concerns about your service.  In particular, clients who use harsh skin treatments or are using strong derma products (Retin-A for example) should check with their doctor first OR avoid waxing all together.  For some harsher products (Renova, Differin or Accutane for example — there are others), waxing should be avoided since it weakens the skin and could result in tearing of the skin when the wax is removed.  As always — if in doubt, check with your medical provider prior to visiting our Boutique.
